Debbie Hanrahan
We came to Fiona Young Tuition when my daughter expressed frustration
with the slow pace of learning in Kindergarten. It became obvious
that Charlotte was a gifted student with an above average IQ.
The teachers tried to adapt work for her but they had children
of other ability levels to work with, and the curriculum, which
dictated their focus. It was not in the school’s interest
to move one student too far ahead of the others.
Charlotte felt frustrated, isolated and cheated. She desperately
wanted harder work and she became more withdrawn when her needs
were compromised to suit others.
Fiona Young Tuition (now Get Ahead Learning) allowed Charlotte
to work at her level and her own pace; she became an independent
reader in three terms. She moved from Cat in the Hat to Harry
Potter, because she was offered work at her ability level, and
a pace tailored to her needs.
The one-on-one lesson helped her believe in herself and regain
her love of learning. She was happier because she was being
given the skills she needed to do the things she wanted to do,
the frustration was gone and the house was a happier place to
live in!
Charlotte’s tutors were professional, dedicated, caring
and supportive. They were a pleasure to deal with and gave excellent
feedback. The management were also very good to deal with from
the start, always pleasant and keen to address any issues I
raised in detail. It gave me confidence in the centre I had
chosen.
I was impressed at the way in which they time tabled classes
to take into consideration Charlotte’s age, so tutoring
did not make her too tired, she always had early lessons and
even when circumstances changed for her tutor efforts were made
to keep her in the desired time slot.
The physical environment was also stimulating and welcoming,
there was a lot to see but it was also relaxed rather than stiff
and formal, like some classrooms. Charlotte always enjoyed the
display of children’s art as we entered. The materials
used were fun and educational. I also found the books to be
quite unique in their ability to interest Charlotte’s
advanced mind while teaching her the basics necessary for reading.
Charlotte moved from first class to second class at the end
of term 3. The grade skip was a breeze for her due to the support
that Fiona Young Tuition provided and I can be confident that
she has no “gaps” in her knowledge because of the
way in which the tutor prepared Charlotte and supported her
transition.
We no longer require support for Charlotte in reading or maths,
as her school situation is now matching her needs, however,
we have decided to stay with the centre so Charlotte can learn
a language as this is not covered by the school either. Fiona
Young Tuition is an excellent way to bridge the gap between
what school can provide and what a child needs as an individual
to reach their potential. I only wish people realised that even
gifted children need support at school so they too don’t
give up and adopt the idea “near enough is good enough.”
When you get it right it’s nice to be told and you certainly
deserve every compliment. Both your organization and team are
always supportive and will go the extra mile without a worry.
